Beauty pageant that empowers disabled people

A recent beauty contest for people living with disabilities has proven so successful that the organisers have decided to make it an annual event

After realising that most disabled people have extremely limited opportunities and often suffer from a lack of self-confidence, Mochachoes Entertainment, a company that strives to empower disabled persons recently hosted a beauty contest for the disabled. The Nathi Sibahle Beauty Pageant for men and women living with disability attracted a huge crowd including people in wheelchairs, crutches, paraplegics and other forms of disability.

Jabulile Mfuphi and Andiswa Nene were crowned Mr and Miss Nathi Sibahle winners.

The success of this event has now encouraged organisers to turn it into an annual event.  Thato Jonkora, event organiser, who is also disabled, said there was more to be done to inspire and empower disabled people.

“We want to encourage them to feel good about themselves and see that there is beauty beyond disability. The community needs to know that we are all the same whether you are disabled or not. We would like to one day have a Mr and Miss South Africa who is living with disability,” said Jonkora.

He encouraged people to lend a hand in developing and empowering disabled people as they did not choose to be disabled
