Did I enjoy the wine?

Hopefully you will be spending a lot more time drinking wine than evaluating or tasting wine, except at the TOPS at Parklane Wine Festival which provides you with an opportunity to expand your wine drinking options in one room, with friends. This is your opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and experiment with new tastes, wines, estates and varietals.
A problem many people have with wine is “oenophobia”, a fear of wine. This does not necessarily refer to drinking wine, but a fear from a variety of factors starting with unfamiliarity with wine and how to talk about wine and explain what you’re tasting.
Being a complete wine pleb and having the inability to remember most of the terminology, especially after a few glasses of wine, I have taken the simple approach of, “did I enjoy the wine?” That is my starting point, essentially Test 1. I then try to figure out when I would drink the wine; Friday evening with burgers? At a braai on the weekend? To be kept in the wine fridge (most of us can’t afford a cellar, either to build or stock it) for drinking on a special occasion? On a warm summer afternoon after work? Once I have those questions answered I would weigh up the pricing point, either in relation to other wines, or based on when I would drink the wine.
My friends and colleagues who are “wine connoisseurs” will add in the five basic steps in tasting wine; colour, swirl, smell, taste, and savour. Going back to basics they will still revert to the first question, “did I enjoy the wine?”
This is your opportunity to ask questions, enjoy wine and experience a great Maritzburg event which supports CHOC House. The Wine Festival is proudly sponsored by TOPS at SPAR, Parklane Cellars, Parklane SUPERSPAR, Thirsti, The Royal Agricultural Society and the Public Eye.
With only 550 tickets on offer this annual Festival of Wine takes place at the Royal Showgrounds on Thursday, July 26 starting at 6pm. A wide variety of food sponsored by Parklane SUPERSPAR and its suppliers will be on offer. Tickets are available online via www.ticketpros.co.zaor via Payzone at Parklane. Supplied
